Back Up iPhone Photos Automatically to DropBox

You can really never have too many backups of your most important files, and since our iPhone photos and pictures often fall into the ‘very important’ category, having an automatic backup solution directly from your iPhone can be a good idea. Yes, using iCloud will back up some photos, but it doesn’t offer direct access to a single picture the way that copying them to your computer does. That’s where Dropbox can come in, offering a bit of both worlds; direct photo access, but the photos are backed up to the cloud.

Back up iPhone photos to Dropbox

For the unfamiliar, Dropbox offers an excellent cloud based file storage solution that is free at the entry level for 2GB of space. Referring friends and others to sign up can net you a total of 18GB of free space, otherwise Pro paid solutions offer anywhere from 100GB to 500GB at monthly rates. If you intend on backing up tons and tons of photos to DropBox, jumping to one of the paid plans is probably a good idea, but even at the free level you can store a fair amount of your most important pictures and access them again at any time from anywhere.

This is not meant to be a replacement to regular iPhone backups to iTunes or iCloud, nor regularly transferring pictures to a local computer for backup, but it does offer an excellent simple solution for another layer of backups, providing easy redundancy for photo backups that happens automatically.

Configure Simple Automatic iPhone Photo Backups with Dropbox

  • Get Dropbox free from the App Store and sign up for an account if you haven’t done so yet (2GB account is free, pay for more)

  • Launch Dropbox on the iPhone and login with DropBox

  • At the “Camera Upload” screen, choose “Only Wi-Fi” (recommended) and then tap “Enable”, then tap “Allow” to provide DropBox access to the camera roll to begin uploading photos

The Wi-Fi Only upload setting is recommended otherwise you can quickly go over your cellular data plan limits.

The DropBox app Photos tab will have a red badge indicating how many photos remain to be uploaded, and selecting that tab will show you the progress of uploads from Camera Roll. The initial backup process can take a while because

Note: if you would rather manually manage and upload photos from the iPhone directly to Dropbox, turn automatic uploads OFF from Settings, and instead handle uploads directly from the Dropbox app itself.

Accessing Backed Up iPhone Photos from DropBox

Once you have your iPhone photos backed up to Dropbox, you can access them anytime from the Dropbox iOS app on any device using the same login. Browsing through photos stored in Dropbox is easy, and images are stored chronologically.

Downloading a picture back to the iPhone (or another iOS device) is just a matter of launching the app then:

  • Tap the Photos tab

  • Select the photo you want to download and choose “Save to Photo Library” to transfer it back to your iPhone from Dropbox

Download a photo from Dropbox back to iPhone

Another significant feature of Dropbox is the availability of a desktop app (also a free download), meaning you can always access any photos or files backed up to Dropbox from your iPhone right from the desktop OS, whether that’s Mac OS X or Windows. On the desktop side of things, Dropbox behaves like any other folder in the OS X file system, providing for simple access to everything, with easy drag & drop support of uploads and downloads.

For users who like direct access to files and the file system, Dropbox behaves like iCloud should behave, without having to resort to quirky tweaks to gain direct control of files like what is required when accessing iCloud from the desktop. Again, it’s not meant to be a replacement to iCloud, but it does offer some nice perks that go well to complement Apple’s backup offerings. Even if you don’t pay for a larger level of Dropbox storage, having the free 2GB plan to store some of your most precious photo memories is so easy that there is little reason not to do so.

Heads up to iDownloadBlog for the idea.

Refreshing Finder Windows in Mac OS X

There is no refresh button or keyboard shortcut for the OS X Finder, something which can become a nuisance when a folder window or directory does not refresh contents after something has changed. That may be a fairly rare occurrence with a Mac built-in hard drive, but external drives and particularly network drives used for file sharing can often exhibit this behavior, where adjustments to the file system are not represented in the active Finder window.

Refresh Finder windows in Mac OS X

Because there isn’t a direct method to refresh Finder windows, you can use one of these tricks to go about refreshing window contents instead.

Refresh by Jumping to Parent Directory & Back

For folders with a hierarchy, going to the parent directory than back to the present working directly is often the fastest, which can be done quickly with the following keyboard shortcut:

  • Command+Up Arrow followed by Command+Down Arrow

Another option is to just click the Back button followed by the Forward button:

Refresh Finder window contents

This has the same end effect of refreshing the Finder window contents, though rather than going to the parent directory you’ll go back to the prior working directory, and forward to return to where you started.

Refresh a root Finder Window by Jumping Around

The obvious limitation with the aforementioned parent directory trick is if you’re in a folder at the root of a directory, with no parent to jump to. In these cases, the easiest way to refresh a root Finder window would be to alter the keyboard shortcuts to jump to a consistent directory like Applications, then back again:

  • Command+Shift+A followed by Command+[

Any of the command shortcuts found under the “Go” menu work, but Command+Shift+A for Applications is easy to remember, and Command+[ always goes back a folder.

Refresh All Finder Windows by Relaunching Finder

The third option is to forcibly refresh every Finder window by manually relaunching the Finder. This is a bit extreme for just trying to update a single windows contents, but if you find the prior methods are not working, or if you require every single window to be refreshed, this may be the easiest solution.

  • Hold down the OPTION key and right-click on the Finder icon in the Dock, choose “Relaunch”

Refresh Finder by relaunching Finder app in OS X

This actually restarts the Finder app in OS X (not the entire Mac), refreshing everything in the file system. An alternative solution that accomplishes the same task is to forcibly quit the Finder process by using the “killall Finder” command through Terminal, which causes Finder to reopen immediately thereby refreshing contents.

A potential downside with using the relaunch/killing methods is that it often logs out network connections and file shares, keep that in mind before going this route.

See What Processes Are Running in the Background of iOS

Task management on iPhone iOS does not have an Activity Monitor or task manager the way that desktop Macs do within OS X, but if you’d like to see what apps and processes are running in the background of an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can do so using a few different methods. For most users, simply showing the multitasking bar is sufficient, but the curious can also reveal system-level processes using alternate methods with a third party app or, for users who have jailbroken their devices, the command line.

1: The Basic iOS Task Manager

Just about every iOS user is probably aware of the task manager by now, which is accessed by double-clicking the Home button. The row of icons across the bottom show what apps are running in the background, and you can flip left or right to see more of them.

Task Manager in iOS

The task manager only shows apps though, and if you were hoping for something a bit more specific or technical, you’ll need to turn to another solution from a third party.

2: Use a Process App like DeviceStats

DeviceStats is a free third party app that may not be the prettiest thing in the world, but it works to show you which processes are actively running in the background of an iOS device, including daemons and background tasks.

Launching DeviceStats on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch will show a variety of tabs and options, but what we’re interested in is the “Processes” tab, which will also have a red badge on it to indicate the total number of processes running.

Background process list on the iPhone

Scrolling through the list should reveal some familiar names of apps that you have open, things like Camera, Calculator, Videos, Photos, Preferences, Music, etc, and there will also be many tasks shown that are background processes, system tasks, and daemons.

Nothing listed within DeviceStats is directly actionable through the app itself, meaning that even if you identify a process you can’t really do anything about it unless it’s a standard app. Standard apps can be quit as usual, or killed (forcibly quit) through direct measures. There is no way to kill or quit out of background daemons and tasks running within iOS, however.

3: Using ‘top’ or ‘ps aux’ from the Command Line – Jailbreak Only

Users who have jailbroken their iOS devices can access the command line directly, either by using an app like MobileTerminal or by connecting directly to the device through SSH.

Once connected through the command line, you can use the ‘top’ or ‘ps aux’ command to see all active processes. “top” will provide a live updated list of processes, whereas ‘ps aux’ will print a snapshot of all processes and daemons, but not update any live CPU or memory usage. Processes that have been identified by ps or top can also be killed directly through the command line, but that may have unintended consequences for the iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, and cause it to freeze up or crash, requiring a device reboot. Again, this is only accessible through jailbroken devices, which makes this option fairly limited.

How to Block All Incoming Network Connections in Mac OS X

The OS X Firewall provides an optional ability to block all incoming network connections, offering a significant security boost to Macs that are located in untrusted networks or hostile network environments.

Block incoming network connections in Mac OS X

Because this is the strictest level of preventative network access possible in OS X through the built-in Mac firewall, the ideal usage is for situations where the default assumption would be to not trust any incoming network connection attempts. Accordingly, this is simply too strict to be practical for average users in most environments, but it is at least worthwhile knowing how to enable the feature should it become necessary at some point.

Blocking All Inbound Network Connections in OS X

This feature is available in all versions of Mac OS X:

  • Open System Preferences from the  Apple menu and choose the “Security & Privacy” panel

  • Select the “Firewall” tab and then click the lock icon in the corner to login and allow changes

  • Choose “Turn On Firewall” if it hasn’t been enabled yet, then choose “Firewall Options”

  • Firewall options allow you to control connection blocking

  • Select the topmost “Block all incoming connections” option

Block all incoming connections in Mac OS X with this firewall option

As noted by the preference panel, when enabled this blocks all network connections to the Mac, including all sharing services, all file sharing through networks, screen sharing, remote access, remote login, and remote connectivity through SSH and SFTP, iChat Bonjour, AirDrop file transfers, iTunes music sharing, ICMP requests and responses – literally everything that is inbound which is not required for basic internet connectivity and servicing.

Blocks Inbound Connections, Not Broadcasts

It’s important to note this setting will not prevent the Mac from broadcasting it’s presence on a network if certain networking features are enabled (like File Sharing, AirDrop, Samba for Windows sharing, etc) and it does nothing to prevent outgoing connections, it will only impact inbound connection attempts from all nonessential internet services. For a specific example; if a user left File Sharing turned ON but blocked all incoming connections with the firewall, the Mac would still show up on network scans, but nobody would be able to connect to it. If blocking the Mac from broadcasting it’s presence on a network is desired as well, simply go to the “Sharing” preference panel and turn off the services that are revealing it’s presence.

No DSDT patch for Asus M4A785TD-V EVO motherboard #DSDT

After failing to find any DSDTs for my motherboard (Asus M4A785TD-V EVO) on this site, Google or any other sites with DSDT databases, I looked at how to create your own DSDT.

I have looked at a list of DSDT patches here and could not find one for my motherboard. I also cannot find any online.

How do you go about creating your own DSDT patch? Is there an automatic way of doing it, or do you have to do it by hand?

Wrong CPU given. How can i fix this? #iATKOS

Hey,

I am running a Hackintosh at 10.6.8, i wanted to upgrade to 10.7 lion, without losing my files. But whenever i open the installer it tells me it needs atlease a core 2 duo, i3, i5 or i7.

I am absolutely sure i have an i3 inside my pc, But in "about this mac" it shows me that i have an 2.93ghz dual-core intel xeon, it also shows wrong ram speed.

The problem is that the installer won't run.

How can i make Mac OS X Realise that i AM running with an i3 and not with an dual-core intel xeon to make the installer work?

Maximus Extreme Build #iATKOS #ML2

Hey there...

It's been a while since I last posted on here. Since then I bought a new Rig, and temporarily retired my old one. I say temporarily because at the moment it's pending the right drivers to Hackintosh it. Which brings me to my question.

First off let me list the components inside this machine :

Quote:

- ASUS ROG Maximus Extreme LGA775 Mobo (2008)

- Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @2.8Ghz CPU

- 8Gb 4x2gb Kingston DDR3 1333Mhz RAM

- XFX Geforce GT620 2GB DDR3 GPU

- Sound Blaster Fatal1ty Professional Sound Card

- Thermaltake Smart SE SPS-630M 630W PSU

Second off, I would like to point out that I am no stranger to Hackintoshing, since at this very moment I already got Mountain Lion 10.8.4 running on a very old and decrepit Core 2 Duo machine. So guide won't be necessary. Also I am not asking for Mavericks, just Mountain Lion. I need it for professional reasons. Beta is unstable.

Now, I ask my question. Will I be able to Hackintosh this machine ? If so, please be so kind as to point me to the right drivers/kexts I need to get it up and running ? Latest versions and with Hardware QE/CI enabled if possible.

Thanks to all who will help in advance. Your input is very much appreciated.

Cheers !
